When Eastman and aristocratic teacher Elaine Goodall (played by Paquin) worked hard to improve the lives of Native Americans on the reservation, Senator Dawes lobbied President Grant (played by Thompson) for more humane treatment, opposing General William Tecumse Sherman's bellicose stance. The hope of the Native Americans rose in the form of the Prophet Studi and the Ghost Dance, a savior movement that promised to end their suffering under white rule.
